Purpose
To encourage reading, curiosity, critical thinking and lifelong learning among children, particularly those from small towns and rural communities.
What we do
FYM supports community-based book clubs where children read, discuss ideas, ask questions, learn from one another and enjoy learning beyond the classroom. Clubs meet in person where possible and online when circumstances require.
Young volunteers facilitate reading, discussion, creative activities and peer learning in an open and participatory environment.
Intended impact
Children develop stronger reading habits, greater confidence, communication and critical-thinking skills, and a lasting interest in learning.
What we have done
Since 2024, FYM has supported two weekend Rural Book Clubs for children aged 5 to 7 and 8 to 10. Each group takes part in a 90-minute session every weekend. Around 80% of participating children come from small towns and rural villages, where opportunities for learning beyond the classroom are often limited.
The clubs provide an open and interactive environment where children read together, discuss ideas, ask questions and freely share their thoughts. For many participants, this is a new learning experience that complements classroom education while encouraging confidence, curiosity and enjoyment in learning.
Results and evidence
- 39 children participated: 21 aged 5 to 7 and 18 aged 8 to 10.
- An FYM facilitator observed increased interest in reading and learning beyond the classroom in 43% of children aged 5 to 7 and 61% of children aged 8 to 10.
- Positive changes in confidence, reading interest or learning habits were reported by 65% of parents of children aged 5 to 7 and 52% of parents of children aged 8 to 10.
